Reaction Post Brown v Board of Education

Today in class my peers presented their findings based on the position they took on the case Brown v. Board of education. Although we know how the court ruled in this case it was interesting listening to different arguments relating to this case. Each side took different stances in this case and presented arguments that strayed from the traditional arguments of this case.

One argument I found particularly interesting was the religious argument in favor of education segregation. Often times moderately to extreme religious people argue in favor of racial segregation. More moderate practitioners argue against cross-racial marriage and reproduction. But more extreme practitioners argue against mixing races in general. Therefore this argument is formed.

I found this argument quite intreating because I have seen religious people make this argument before. With biblical examples on the table, I just find it interesting that some people actually believe in this. Relating this to the historical argument, this was probably a common viewpoint for a lot of pro-segregation Americans at the time.

Another thing that I found interesting was there were contradicting arguments about the quality of black schools. The side in favor of Brown argued that the schools were inadequate and sometimes farther away from black communities. The side in favor of the Board of Education argued that the schools were closer to black communities and that transportation was provided to black students.

Another thing I noticed is that there was an argument made about how Black students might be benefited from being in a classroom setting with peers and mentors that look like them. I found this argument particularly interesting because it makes sense. With the desegregation of schools, a black student may go their whole educational career with all white teachers and be the minority among their peers.

The last argument I found interesting was the argument made about the economy. Desegregation in schools would take away jobs from black Americans. Black teachers, bus drivers, janitors, and cafeteria workers will take a hit with the desegregation of schools.
